Tweens: Friendship and Emotions

Make room for feelings. Choose your next move.

Seven resources for ages 10–12 explore peer moments, assumptions, and support. A fictional group-chat example, response rehearsal, and optional connection practice build a sequence that respects privacy.

A sequence you can adapt

Choose the pages that fit. The sequence is optional; it is not a complete treatment protocol.

  1. Understand

A Peer Moment Has More Than One Part

Separate events, feelings, guesses, and choices in an everyday peer situation.

  2. See a fictional example

    Jordan and the Unanswered Message

See a fictional tween check a guess and choose a manageable response.

  3. Explore

Facts, Feelings, and My Next Choice

Sort a manageable friendship moment and choose a response within your control.

  4. Rehearse

Try the Conversation Before You Need It

Practice a clear request and a safe exit from a low-stakes peer conversation.

  5. Practice between sessions

    One Low-Pressure Connection

Plan a small, optional friendship action that leaves room for a no.

  6. Reflect and review

What Kind of Connection Fits Me?

Review a peer interaction or a missed plan and identify a useful adjustment.

  7. Prepare to facilitate

    Facilitating Tween Peer Work

Support reflection about peer relationships while protecting choice and privacy.

Facilitator guidance

Use fictional peer situations until a tween chooses otherwise. Distinguish uncertainty or ordinary disagreement from harassment, discrimination, threats, or a power imbalance that needs adult action.
